Mary Ocher returns to Vienna with the new piano album "Weimar", her most intimate record yet. The album draws on early 20th-century minimalism, chamber pop, and modern classical influences. Its title alludes to the current era, echoing the fall of the Weimar Republic a century ago and the shadow of fascism that rose in its wake. Born in Moscow to Jewish-Ukrainian parents and raised in Tel Aviv, she learned from a very young age that questioning authority came at a hefty price. At 20, after refusing the military draft, she left for Berlin, where she became a central underground figure, known for her uncompromising politics and critical writing on nationalism and war, influenced by her background and an interest in history and debate. Following extensive international touring across four continents, collaborations with Mogwai, King Khan, Felix Kubin, and Die Tödliche Doris, and a recent German Record Critics' Award, The album arrives at a pivotal moment; with nationalism, censorship, and cultural fragmentation on the rise, Ocher's examination of identity, fear, and belonging becomes an invitation to reconsider how we live together, and what kind of society we want to build. https://maryocher.com Pressestimmen: "Drawing parallels between our present day and the early 20th century rise of racism, Weimar eschews Ocher’s usual maximalism, revealing a starker kind of drama.” - The Wire “Weimar is compelling in its starkness, from jaded cabaret opener ‘The Dance’ to the three-part minimalist instrumental ‘The Narrative.’” - The Guardian "The mood is dark and foreboding - a new fascism has never been so close.
