For more than five months, daily protests have been taking place in Albania against the Rama government, which is selling off and destroying shared environmental and urban spaces. Initially launched in opposition to the Kushner–Trump family’s tourism development project in the Zvërnec area and on the island of Sazan, what has come to be known as the Flamingo Revolution has now expanded into a nationwide movement spanning the diaspora, demanding Rama’s unequivocal and non-negotiable resignation. At this revolutionary moment for Albanian society, the Diana Malaj, who is divided between Albania, Slovenia, and Austria and has recently undergone an intense experience of emigration, offers a reflection on the emotional experience of the Flamingo Revolution, occupying a position of neither being fully part of the diaspora nor fully resident in her home country. This reflection will be accompanied by visual documentation of the Flamingo Revolution protests. For the presentation at Forum Stadtpark Diana will be joined by activist, filmmaker, and journalist Ronald Qema for an open conversation reflecting on their personal experiences of emigration and displacement in direct relation to the ongoing protests in Albania. The evening will also feature a screening of Qema’s film The other wedding. The other wedding Taking an airplane back home every summer is as usual as it can be for a migrant. This summer, what is there to come for the filmmaker is nowhere close to the usual. While it starts as a film about marriage and family relations it turns into one of struggling between happenings in the private and the public, a ceremony at home and a civil unrest in the streets. The film follows the meandering of the camera into these two parallel worlds which at the same time serves as a tool to avoid full complicity to either. A story of a migrant coming back home amidst revolutions both inside and outside the home.
