Ein Vierspur-Tonbandgerät, eine Wohnung im Süden Londons, ein Album, das die Clubs umgekrempelt hat: Die Stereo MC's feiern 35 Jahre "Connected" und bringen den Groove von 1992 zurück auf die Bühne. Wo andere den Wäscheständer aufstellen, steht hier ein Vierspur-Tonbandgerät, und darauf entstehen Tracks, die sich um Genregrenzen wenig scheren. Hip-Hop trifft auf Dub, House auf Funk, dazwischen Texte, die mehr wollen, als bloß den Takt zu füllen. Aus dem Londoner Underground wächst so eine Band, die die britische Clubkultur neu verkabelt. Der große Wurf gelingt 1992 mit "Connected" bei Island Records. Das Album klettert in den britischen Charts bis auf Platz zwei, bringt der Band zwei Brit Awards ein und liefert eine Reihe von Singles, die bis heute Tanzflächen füllen: "Connected", "Step It Up", "Ground Level" und "Creation". Wer in den Neunzigern auch nur einmal ausgegangen ist, hat zumindest den Titeltrack im Ohr. Ob gewollt oder nicht. Zum 35er geht es nun quer durch Europa, und zwar mit dem Kern der Band: Rob Birch als Frontmann, Sänger und Produzent, Nick Hallam als DJ und Produzent, Cath Coffey mit einer Stimme, die gegen jede Bassline ankommt, und Tansay Omar an Schlagzeug und Percussion. Live hatten die Stereo MC's immer schon den Ruf, eher Energieschub als Konzert zu sein. Ein Nostalgieabend also? Nicht ganz.
